The Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law and the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law at UNSW Law made a submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee's Inquiry into the Australian Citizenship Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017.

While we support the broad objectives that underpin the Bill we have serious concerns regarding its suitability to achieve these objectives, and, indeed, we are concerned that its provisions may undermine these objectives.

Professor Jane McAdam provided a submission on behalf of the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade's inquiry into implications of climate change for Australia's national security. One of the Kaldor Centre’s areas of expertise is the impact of climate change on displacement and migration, which is the focus of the present submission. The submission therefore relates to paragraph (f) of the Committee’s terms of reference – ‘other related matters’ – but also touches on paragraphs (a) and (d).

Khanh Hoang provided a submission on behalf of the Kaldor Centre to the Committee’s Inquiry into the Migration Legislation Amendment (Visa Revalidation and Other Measures) Bill 2016 [Provisions].  The Bill seeks to insert a visa revalidation framework into the Migration Act. The Bill’s Explanatory Memorandum explains (page 5) that the Bill’s purpose is to support the introduction and trial of ‘a new longer validity visa visitor visa’ (up to 10 years in duration).
