“The year 2018 will go down in history as a significant year for the protection of refugees and migrants – at least on paper,” Kaldor Centre Director Jane McAdam said in her much-anticipated Year in Review at the Centre’s signature annual conference.

But her speech also cast light on darker contemporary politics and the dangerous rhetoric now affecting long-standing legal protections for people seeking asylum around the world.

"We all know that it doesn’t have to be like this. It shouldn’t be like this,” Professor McAdam said. “In Australia, we have moved far away from [a principled] position in political rhetoric, in law, and in practice. Let’s re-imagine how it could be, with a bit of leadership, commitment, and follow-through. Here’s what we need to do."
